ArcSig meeting 08/18/2009

August 19, 2009

ArcSig meeting 08/18/2009 – 6:30 PM Ft. Lauderdale at Microsoft

All (!) seats were taken after free pizza and refreshing soft drinks. 43 Users came to our August meeting to hear Jesus Rodriguez’s excellent presentation “From SOA to WOA”. Despite being one of the latest acronyms in the never ending distributed programming dictionary, Web Oriented Architectures (WOA) represents one of the most important architecture styles in service orientation. In a nutshell, WOA incorporates the principles of the Web and Representational State Transfer (REST) into Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) to achieve high levels of performance, availability and scalability.

Jesus Rodriguez is the Chief Architect of Tellago, Inc. He is also a Microsoft BizTalk Server MVP, an Oracle ACE and one of a few Architects worldwide to be a member of the Microsoft Connected Systems Advisor team. As a member, Jesus has been selected to participate in a variety of Software Design Reviews with Microsoft’s Product Teams including Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation and BizTalk Server.

After the presentation we “raffled” a substantial amount of Microsoft Books to the praticipants and had time for a Q&A session and some great discussions and socializing.

Thank you very much Jesus for your presentation, and Jeff for hosting!

Windows 7 – install error Visual Studio 2008

August 9, 2009

If you install Windows 7 new and later install Visual Studio 2008, you might get an error during installation. Reason for this error was that Windows 7 and updates installed Silverlight 3 previous to the VS2008 installation. Deinstall Silverlight 3 from Control Panel and VS 2008 will install just fine. I hope that helps!

ArcSig Meeting 07/21/2009 Ft. Lauderdale at Global Response

Don Demsak, Senior Solution Architect at Tellago, gave us an excellent presentation about Architecting Web Applications using ASP.Net Webforms with jQuery and WCF. Don showed us how to avoid some of the architectural pitfalls when moving from a pure server side transformation model to a more client side friendly transformation model.

Furthermore, we got important information about how to redesign ASMX web services to WCF web services and how to utilize jQuery and WCF. User group members had the opportunity to get answers from Don for actual problems they encountered regarding WCF and jQuery.

To learn more about Don and the topic go to www.donxml.com

Thank you very much to the Shooster Family, the owners of Global Response, for hosting our meeting!

Oleg Sych presented a great session about Code Generation with T4 and Visual Studio. Oleg Sych introduced the Template Transformation Toolkit (T4) – one of the best-hidden new features of Visual Studio 2008. T4 allows you to use simple ASP.NET-like template syntax to generate application source code, configuration files, stored procedures and more. This session provided an overview of code generation, describes T4 template syntax and shows how to create a template for generating CRUD stored procedures.

Oleg is Senior Lead Consultant for http://www.catapultsystems.com. He has been working as a professional software engineer since 1993, building distributed enterprise applications since 2000 and working with .NET technologies since 2002. Oleg holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science, MCSD and MCPD Enterprise certifications. His professional interests include framework design and enterprise application architecture. In his spare time, Oleg writes and speaks about code generation. Check out his blog at http://www.olegsych.com for in-depth coverage of Text Templates in Visual Studio.

Thank you very much Oleg, for coming all the way from Tampa for this presentation!

ArcSig Meeting Microsoft Ft. Lauderdale 03/17/2009

Jason Milgram’s excellent session “Building a Message Oriented Cloud Middleware Service in WCF” brought a great amount of usergroup members to the meeting, despite the fact that it was St. Patrick’s Day!

Jason explained in detail the Architecture of his solution, named Linxter. With Linxter you are able to rapidly build connected applications using Microsoft developer tools. The solution encapsulates the complexities of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and exposes its powerful features through a few method calls. Jason introduced 4 starter kits and demonstrated the messaging functions live, sending and receiving messages via the Boston host and data center. Really cool stuff! Take a look at Jason’s web page!

For more detail information, test accounts and starter kits visit Jason’s Web page:
http://www.linxter.com.

The meeting ended around 9 PM with a Ruffle and 8 happy user group members could take some cool prizes home. Thank you Jason for the great talk and a special thank you to Quent and Tom for hosting the meeting!

The next meeting date and topic will be posted shortly, stay tuned!
